A list of sermon topics on a revival poster many years ago included a sermon title called, SOMEBODY DIED AND LEFT YOU A MILLION DOLLARS. I did not hear the sermon, but the title intrigues me.
The Apostle Paul in his farewell speech to the elders of Ephesus said, “And now I commend you to God and the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you the inheritance among them that are sanctified. According to Paul somebody died and left you an Inheritance.
When Paul made his defense before king Agrippa, Governor Festus and Bernice, he told him how the Lord had sent him to open their eyes, to turn them from the darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they might receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in Me. Paul’s message to Agrippa was somebody died and left you an inheritance.
The Apostle Peter made a similar statement in his first epistle when he said, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who according to His great mercy begat us again unto a Living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled, that fadeth not away, reserved for you in heaven. According to Peter somebody died and left you an inheritance.
Both Peter and Paul agree that the Christian has an inheritance. Peter gives us some idea of the value of the inheritance when he also says in his first epistle, “Knowing that we were redeemed not by corruptible things, with silver or gold, from your vain manner of life handed down from your fathers; but with precious blood, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot, even the blood of Christ.”
Somebody died and left us an inheritance that cannot be valued by any amount of silver and gold. The price paid was the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. He Himself said the night before He died on the cross; “This is My blood of the covenant which is poured out for many unto the remission of sins.” And so as we eat of the bread and drink of the cup on the Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, let us remember; somebody died and left you an inheritance far greater than a million dollars.
